Women's Development Program — Art in Tanzania
When women thrive, communities thrive. This program makes that happen.
In Tanzania's villages, many young mothers face a compounding set of challenges: limited access to education, densely populated living conditions, few pathways to financial independence, and, in too many cases, a lack of awareness of their own fundamental rights — leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.
These are not abstract problems. They are the daily reality of the women Art in Tanzania works with. And the work of changing that reality is where you come in.
About the Program
Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. Our Women's Development Program is one of our most direct and human-centred placements — working alongside women in villages to build skills, expand awareness, and create real economic opportunity.
We are looking for multi-professional students and interns who bring creativity, commitment, and their own ideas to this work. Innovation is not just welcomed here — it is expected.
The Challenge We're Addressing
Most of the women we work with lack access to the education needed to start or grow a small business. Many are unaware of their basic human rights. Young mothers in particular face acute vulnerability — navigating poverty, caregiving, and limited support in environments where the competition for livelihoods is intense.
Art in Tanzania's response is practical, educational, and rights-based — equipping women with skills, knowledge, and networks that create lasting change.
What You'll Do
Your placement is tailored to your academic background, skills, and interests. Work spans several interconnected areas:
💼 Entrepreneurship & Business Skills Training: Teach women the practical skills they need to start and sustain small businesses — from horticulture and product development to finding markets and managing finances. The goal is not just awareness, but application.
⚖️ Women's Rights Education: Help women understand their fundamental human rights in accessible, contextually relevant ways — empowering them to recognise and respond to problematic situations with confidence and knowledge.
🌐 English & IT Training: Deliver vocational training in English language skills and basic digital literacy — opening doors to communication, education, and economic participation that would otherwise remain closed.
🏥 Health & Medical Awareness: Support the development of health information sessions and help expand access to medical services and health literacy among women and their families.
📱 Social Media & Advocacy: Help raise awareness of women's issues among the broader Tanzanian population through our social media channels, amplifying the voices and stories of the women we work with.
Your Ideas Matter
This programme actively invites interns to bring their own thinking. If you have an approach, method, or project idea that could strengthen the fieldwork, we want to hear about it. Some of our most effective initiatives have come directly from intern innovation — and yours could be next.
Teamwork is central to how we operate. Interns collaborate across disciplines, combining expertise in education, health, business, communications, and community development to create outcomes none of us could achieve alone.
