Art in Tanzania — NGO Internship & Volunteer Programme
Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has been delivering community-based development work across Tanzania — building local capacity, supporting people living in poverty, and connecting international students and volunteers with meaningful, hands-on placements that make a genuine difference. We are a self-sustaining, non-profit NGO, and our programmes attract approximately 250 participants each year from over 400 partner universities worldwide.
About the Programme
Our community placements are designed to give you real, practical experience in the day-to-day management of an NGO operating in a developing African context. You will work directly within AIT's operations — managing volunteer and intern activities across multiple programmes, creating weekly work plans and reports, handling budgets and accounts, developing ongoing community initiatives, and contributing to new strategic approaches.
Academic-level team leaders will oversee you, and a structured weekly planning and reporting system will keep your placement focused, productive, and professionally rewarding throughout your time with us. Daily work runs from six to eight hours, Monday to Friday, and combines practical fieldwork with planning, reporting, and visibility efforts.
The placement is built around you. Every programme is fully customised to your academic background, professional experience, and personal interests. So whether your expertise lies in health, education, law, environment, marketing, technology, or community development, your time with AIT will be purposeful and directly relevant to your studies and career.
You will collaborate with international teams alongside 15 to 40 students and volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds worldwide, gaining a deeper understanding of NGO operations, African society, and one of the continent's fastest-growing economies. The programme runs year-round with flexible start and end dates — join at any point and stay for as long as your schedule allows.
Beyond your placement work, Tanzania offers extraordinary rewards: rich cultural encounters, breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and the chance to experience daily life in one of Africa's most dynamic and welcoming countries. Affordable, eco-friendly safaris and tours are available for participants and visiting friends throughout your stay.
