Web Development & Social Media Program — Art in Tanzania

Your code and content won't sit in a staging environment. It goes live — reaching 50,000 people in Tanzania.

Most web development and digital marketing internships give you sandboxed tasks on systems that already work. This one gives you something more valuable: a real website, a real audience, and a real organisation that depends on its digital presence to recruit participants, advocate for communities, and sustain its mission.

Art in Tanzania's web and social media platforms is not a side project. They are the primary way the organisation reaches the world — and they need talented, motivated developers and content creators to keep them sharp.

About the Program

Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. Our Web Development & Social Media Program addresses one of the organisation's most constant operational needs: high-quality digital content and a well-maintained, effective web presence.

You will work on live platforms with real responsibilities in a fast-moving NGO environment where your contributions have an immediate and visible impact.

What You'll Work On

💻 Web Development & Maintenance Work directly on Art in Tanzania's websites — volunteerafrica.fi and artintanzania.org — contributing to development, maintenance, UX improvements, and content updates. Whether your background is front-end development, CMS management, or full-stack work, there is meaningful work here for you.

✍️ Content Creation & Copywriting Write, edit, and publish web content that communicates Art in Tanzania's programmes, community impact, and participant experiences clearly and compellingly — to prospective interns, university partners, donors, and the broader public.

📱 Social Media Management & Growth: Manage and grow Art in Tanzania's social media presence — including a Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers — one of the most significant digital platforms for reaching the Tanzanian public. Create and schedule content, engage audiences, analyse performance, and develop strategies that increase reach and engagement across platforms.

📣 Digital Advocacy: Develop content that advocates for the communities Art in Tanzania serves — translating fieldwork, programme outcomes, and human stories into digital content that informs, moves, and mobilises audiences.

🔍 SEO & Digital Visibility Contribute to search engine optimisation efforts that ensure Art in Tanzania's programmes are discoverable by the students and volunteers searching for them — improving organic reach and reducing dependence on paid promotion.

📊 Analytics & Reporting Track and report on digital performance — website traffic, social engagement, content reach — providing the organisation with the data it needs to make informed decisions about its digital strategy.

The NGO Digital Context

Working on digital platforms for an NGO in a developing-country context is different from agency or corporate work in ways that matter professionally. Resources are limited. Priorities shift quickly. The audiences span multiple languages, cultures, and levels of digital literacy. Content must work for a student in Finland and a community partner in Dar es Salaam simultaneously.

That context sharpens your skills, broadens your perspective, and gives your portfolio work that stands out — because it was built under real constraints, for a real purpose, with a real audience.

Structure & Supervision

Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly planning and reporting system keeps your work structured and aligned with your academic requirements. Your placement is tailored to your specific technical background, skills, and professional interests.

How It Works

Hours: 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Start date: Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round. Duration: Adjustable to your academic schedule and goals. Group size: 15–40 international students at any time, drawn from 400+ partner universities worldwide

Web development, UX/UI design, digital marketing, communications, journalism, computer science, information systems, and related disciplines are all well-suited to this programme. Both technical and content-focused backgrounds are welcome — and combinations of the two are particularly valuable.

Life in Tanzania

Beyond your screen time, Tanzania offers an experience that is genuinely difficult to replicate anywhere else. Vibrant culture, extraordinary wildlife, and stunning natural landscapes are part of your daily backdrop. Affordable, sustainable safaris and tours are available for you and visiting friends or family.

Funding

Erasmus+ funding may be available for this placement. Speak with your student office about grant options that could fully or partially fund this experience.
